Activity
Victims of Torture
Background
Freedom from torture is a universal and a fundamental human right for all, as guaranteed and defined in the UN Convention against Torture. Indonesia is not an exception. Survivors of torture live mainly in areas affected by conflict and independence movements. Of specific note are the provinces of Aceh and Papua. In both areas people are targeted by pro-government and pro-independence groups. Support is given to national and local NGOs who are working to provide assistance to survivors of torture and advocate for improved government interventions in legislation and judicial practice.
