USAID Breaks Ground on Housing Program

Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its implementing partner, CHF International, joined officials of the BRR and local government to break ground for the construction of 65 houses in Geumbak Meualon hamlet of Mon Ikeun village, Lhoknga sub-district, Aceh Besar. This is the first phase in the US$10 million project to construct 1,000 houses to resettle survivors of the December 26, 2004 tsunami.

This first construction phase will house than 200 people who have taken shelter in temporary camps or the homes of relatives. The houses will be constructed in compliance with building codes for permanent homes, and include special features to safeguard against earthquake damage. A Community Resettlement Committee (CRC) comprised of local villagers has helped design the homes and will work to ensure transparency throughout the execution of the project.

USAID-CHF will hold a similar groundbreaking ceremony on January 25 in the next targeted community, Pulot village (in Leupeung subdistrict of Aceh Besar).

Hari ini, Badan Pembangunan Internasional Amerika Serikat (USAID) bersama mitra kerjanya, CHF International, bergabung bersama para pejabat Badan Rekonstruksi dan Rehabilitasi (BRR) serta pemerintah daerah untuk meletakkan batu pertama yang menandai dimulainya pembangunan 65 unit rumah di Dusun Geumbak Meualon, Desa Mon Ikeun, Kecamatan Lhoknga, Aceh Besar. Proyek ini merupakan tahap pertama dari proyek senilai 10 juta dolar Amerika Serikat yang akan meliputi pembangunan 1.000 rumah untuk menampung korban tsunami 26 Desember 2004.

Tahap pembangunan pertama ini akan menampung lebih dari 200 orang yang saat ini berada di tenda penampungan sementara atau rumah-rumah sanak saudara mereka. Rumah-rumah tersebut akan dibangun sesuai dengan syarat-syarat rumah permanen, serta dilengkapi dengan alat khusus untuk menghindari kerusakan akibat gempa bumi. Komite Pemukiman Masyarakat (CRC) yang terdiri dari penduduk desa setempat ikut membantu merancang rumah-rumah tersebut dan akan memantau transparansi pelaksanaan proyek ini.

USAID-CHF akan menggelar upacara peletakan batu pertama berikutnya pada 25 Januari 2006 untuk masyarakat di Desa Pulot (Kecamatan Leupeung, Aceh Besar).
