One Year After
James Kunder, Assistant Administrator for Asia and the Near East

I am happy to be here today, representing the U.S. Government to further its commitment to the long-term reconstruction and revitalization of Aceh.
Today we are proud to announce three more USAID-funded projects. Under one of these, USAID granted CHF $10.5 million to build 1,000 homes and key economic infrastructure such as small ports, fishing vessels, ice-making facilities and markets. USAID is partnering with the National Cooperative Business Association with $10.5 million to help finance coffee production and export, livestock renewal, and provide access to microfinance. In a recently awarded $4.5 million grant, USAID will work with The Asia Foundation to assure a better transition from camps to communities, especially to support women led NGO’s and livelihoods.
On Wednesday, we officially made available US$9.825, of which the Governor has a strategic role in ensuring the Peace Process is sustainable and that integration occurs smoothly. Activities to be funded include public information campaigns, public forums, peace-building initiatives, technical assistance and capacity building to key local government offices, community-based programs, and, support to key political processes.
To do all this, we have needed support from local authorities to perform. Today, I would like to especially thank the Acting Governor for his tremendous support. In April, 2006, USAID will open its offices here, in the Office of the Governor through donated space of 382 square meters. We pledge to continue our strong support to work with the people of Aceh to “build back better.”
