USAID Helps Support Indonesia’s 2009 Legislative and Presidential Elections

Jakarta – July 8’s succesful presidential election marked the culmination of over two years of USAID electoral assistance, totalling over $9 million, to Indonesia’s electoral process. In conjuction with the Government of Indonesia, Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) and other implementing partners, USAID built on lessons learned from the 1999 and 2004 elections to ensure a free, fair and credible process in 2009.

USAID programs focused on the strategic areas of political party development, election administration, voter education, election monitoring and oversight and strengthening of the legal framework. USAID programs were implemented through the International Foundation for Elections Sytems (IFES), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI).

USAID supports Indonesia’s democratic consolidation with a broad and integrative portfolio of assistance programs.
