Improving Education and Training Teachers, One Year Later

Andrew S. Natsios, U.S. special envoy for tsunami commemoration and Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between USAID and Syiah Kuala University when visiting Banda Aceh on December 17-18 to commemorate the reconstruction efforts one year after.

The MOU provides a total of US$14 million in assistance to improve the quality of education and teacher training in Aceh, as well as build a new facility for teacher training, and other university facility needs such as rehabilitating student dormitories or faculty housing. Universitas Syiah Kuala is the premier university in the province of Aceh, enrolling around 5,800 students, of which approximately 3,000 lost their housing in the tsunami.
