Overview

In 2003, President Bush announced a $157 million, five-year Presidential Education Initiative to energize and improve the quality of education in Indonesia’s state-run religious and public schools. The approach has emphasized critical thinking and reasoning skills, lively lessons, engaged teachers, and interested parents to promote tolerance, employment readiness, and student centered learning for a participatory democracy.

On April 29, 132 young men and women from Aceh and Nias completed three months of intensive training in carpentry, civil construction, computer applications and bookkeeping at the Politeknik Caltex Riau in Pekanbaru under a joint program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Chevron Corporation.
