Political Party Strengthening & Reform
Objectives
To assist Indonesian political parties to institutionalize democratic procedures and structures; increase the participation of women and historically disenfranchised groups as party members, leaders and candidates; and, assist political parties in developing cohesive and effective issue-based messages.
Program Focus
The three components of the program are: (1) Political Party Organizational Development, (2) Political Party Representation and Outreach, and (3) Political Party Participation in Elections. Activities include:
- Establishment of a Political Party Reform Task Force to review reform issues such as internal party democracy, candidate selection procedures, voter accountability, financial disclosure and representation of women and other marginalized constituencies. This national-level multi-stakeholder forum brings together government officials, political party representatives and civil society groups.
- Utilization of research methodologies and individual party assessments to assist political parties in developing outreach strategies.
- Provision of targeted training for political parties on message development, voter mapping, media relations, and constituency outreach.
- Production and distribution, in coordination with the KPU, of an Election Law Handbook for political parties and related workshops for political parties on new electoral and political party legislation.
- Development and distribution, in coordination with the KPU, of a Political Party Agent Manual and Party Agent Compliance Forms to be used for the 2009 elections.
