Peaceful Political Competition
Objectives
To promote the integrity of the electoral process by supporting Indonesian civil society to conduct domestic election monitoring activities; enhance the skills and capacities of women to become more effective political leaders and candidates for the 2009 Election; and encourage political party officials to improve their internal structures to build democratic, inclusive and sustainable political parties.
Program Focus
The program supports a competitive, transparent, credible electoral process through the following activities:
- Training to promote and prepare female candidates for the 2009 election;
- Capacity building of civil society organizations to conduct independent voter registration audits and election-day parallel vote tabulation;
- Assistance to political parties to develop and conduct training modules on topics such as citizen-centered platforms, campaign management, candidate training, voter outreach and negotiation and dispute resolution skills;
- Assistance to political parties to prepare for and compete in the 2009 Elections including developing the leadership skills of emerging party leaders; and,
- Promoting more equitable gender participation as political party candidates.
The program works with strategic partners such as the Indonesian Women’s Political Caucus (KPPI), the research and advocacy organization- Lembaga Penelitian, Pendidikan, dan Penerangan Ekonomi dan Sosial (LP3ES), and national-level political parties.
