USAID Funds Generators for Aceh’s Governor

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) this afternoon handed over a powerhouse facility with three industrial generators to the Aceh Provincial Governor’s Office, in Banda Aceh. The generators will ensure backup power is available to the entire Governor’s complex in the event of a power failure. The December 26, 2004 earthquake and tsunami damaged the complex’s original backup generator, transformer and related power equipment irreparably. Power outages are a frequent occurrence and cause significant disruption for the Governor and his staff.

The three generators, along with a high-capacity transformer and a sophisticated control panel system, have a combined value of $700,000. In addition to the Governor’s office, this backup power supply will also serve USAID’s newly-opened office facility for 25 employees, which is also located in the Governor’s complex.

The generators constitute one element of USAID’s $400 million tsunami reconstruction program in the disaster-affected province. In order to meet its commitment to the people of Aceh, USAID plans a presence in Banda Aceh until at least 2010. In presenting the powerhouse complex to Acting Governor Azwar Abubakar, Thomas R. Morris, U.S. Representative to Aceh and North Sumatra, said, “We are here for the long-term to see the reconstruction of Aceh through to the end.” Borrowing a phrase from BRR Director Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Morris said the powerhouse is an example of USAID’s commitment to “building back better.”

USAID Membiayai Generator untuk Gubernur Aceh

USAID telah menyerahkan sebuah sarana pembangkit listrik dengan tiga generator industri pada Kantor Gubernur Propinsi Aceh di Banda Aceh. Ketiga generator itu memperkuat bantuan cadangan listrik di seluruh kompleks gubernuran apabila terjadi masalah kelistrikan. Pada tanggal 26 Desember 2004 gempa dan tsunami telah menghancurkan generator kompleks yang lama, transformer dan peralatan terkait tanpa bisa diperbaiki. Pemadaman listrik merupakan keadaan yang sering terjadi dan merupakan gangguan yang besar bagi Gubernur dan staffnya.

Ketiga generator besama dengan transformer yang berkapasitas tinggi serta sistim panel pengendali, seluruhnya berharga $700.000. Disamping kantor Gubernur, pasokan pada alat cadangan listrik ini juga akan dapat melayani sarana kantor USAID yang baru dibuka dengan 25 orang pegawai juga terletak di kompleks gubernuran.

Generator-generator itu merupakan bagian program bantuan rekonsturksi tsunami dari USAID senilai $400 juta di propinsi yang terkena bencana. Agar supaya dapatt memenuhi komitmen kepada warga Aceh, USAID berencana akan berada di Aceh sampai tahun 2010. Dalam penyerahan sarana pembangkit listrik itu kepada Pejabat Gubernur Azwar Abubakar, Wakil Pemerintah Amerika Serikat untuk Aceh dan Sumatra Utara Thomas R.Morris : “Kami berada di sini untuk jangka panjang guna melihat rekonstruksi Aceh sampai akhir”. Dengan meminjam ungkapan dari Direktur BRR Kuntor Mangkusubroto, Morris mengatakan pembangkit ini merupakan contoh komitmen USAID “untuk dukungan yang lebih baik”.
