Gala Celebrates Revitalized Coffee Industry in Gayo Highlands

Dignitaries gathered in the Gayo highlands outside Takengon on February 10 to celebrate the opening of a coffee plantation project that will revitalize the premium coffee industry of Central Aceh. The renovation of the coffee plantation and processing plant is part of a US$ 10 million development project funded by the U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Surya Dharma, Minister for Cooperatives, Small and Medium Scale Businesses, and the other guests toured the coffee facility, which will become the province’s business center for the production of premium quality, certified organic coffee. The plant is owned by the Koperasi Baitul Qiradh Baburrayyanb (KBQB), a registered cooperative made up of 5,000 small coffee producers.
“We look to the future of this province and see that it is filled with potential,” said U.S. Government Representative Tom Morris. “We are committed to working with these farmers, to establish a long term relationship and expand their production into the international market.”
Funded by USAID, the coffee project was managed by the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) of the United States – an organization with years of experience in cooperative business development in Indonesia and expertise in the specialty coffee industry. USAID partnered with NCBA to upgrade the coffee-farming and coffee-processing infrastructure of the region.
Through the project, which began in 2005, the KBQB has expanded its farmer-based membership from 39 to 5,000 in just one year. With the training provided, all the members are now internationally-certified organic producers of high-grade Arabica coffee. The project also offers expertise and equipment to assist in quality processing and international marketing of the cooperative’s coffee. So far, the cooperative has sold 720 metric tons of quality Arabica coffee at premium prices to specialty buyers in the United States.
The USAID/NCBA project also rehabilitated coffee blocks that were destroyed during 30 years of conflict in the region. It also facilitated the creation of a new cooperative, known as Koperasi Kredit Maju Bersama, which provides local farmers with micro-credit opportunities to help them upgrade their coffee-growing and production facilities.
Perayaan Pembukaan Industri Pabrik Kopi Yang Telah Diremajakan di Dataran Tinggi Gayo
Para tokoh masyarakat berkumpul di Dataran Tinggi Gayo di luar kota Takengon pada 10 Februari untuk merayakan pembukaan sebuah proyek perkebunan kopi yang akan meremajakan industri kopi premium di Aceh Tengah. Renovasi pabrik pengolahan dan perkebunan kopi ini merupakan bagian dari proyek pengembangan senilai 10 juta dolar AS yang didanai oleh Badan Pembangunan Internasional Pemerintah AS (USAID).
Menteri Koperasi dan Usaha Kecil dan Menengah (UKM), Surya Dharma dan para undangan lainnya meninjau fasilitas di pabrik ini yang akan menjadi pusat usaha produksi kopi dengan mutu premium bersertifikasi organik di provinsi Aceh. Pabrik ini dijalankan oleh Koperasi Baitul Qiradh Baburrayyanb (KBQB), sebuah koperasi terdaftar yang terdiri dari 5.000 penghasil kopi berskala kecil.
“Kami yakin akan masa depan provinsi ini dan melihat bahwa provinsi ini banyak memiliki potensi,” ujar Wakil Pemerintah A.S. Tom Morris. “Kami berkomitmen untuk bekerja bersama dengan para petani ini guna menjalin hubungan jangka panjang dan mengembangkan produksi mereka ke pasar internasional.”
Proyek perkebunan kopi yang didanai oleh USAID ini dikelola oleh Asosiasi Usaha Koperasi Nasional (the National Cooperative Business Association/NCBA) Amerika Serikat – sebuah organisasi yang berpengalaman selama bertahun-tahun dalam pengembangan usaha koperasi di Indonesia dan mahir di bidang industri kopi jenis khusus. USAID bermitra dengan NCBA untuk meremajakan infrastruktur perkebunan kopi dan pengolahan kopi di daerah ini.
Melalui proyek yang dimulai tahun 2005 ini, KBQB telah memperluas keanggotaannya yang berbasis-petani dari 39 orang menjadi 5.000 orang hanya dalam setahun. Dengan pelatihan yang diberikan, semua anggota kini merupakan penghasil kopi organik Arabika berkualitas tinggi yang bersertifikat internasional. Proyek ini juga menawarkan keahlian dan peralatan untuk membantu pemrosesan berkualitas serta pemasaran internasional kopi milik koperasi tersebut. Sejauh ini, koperasi telah menjual 720 ton metrik kopi Arabika berkualitas dengan harga premium pada pembeli produk-produk khas daerah di Amerika Serikat.
Proyek USAID/NCBA juga merehabilitasi kompleks-kompleks perkebunan kopi yang musnah selama 30 tahun konflik di wilayah ini. Proyek tersebut juga memfasilitasi pembentukan sebuah koperasi baru yang dikenal dengan Koperasi Kredit Maju Bersama, yang menyediakan peluang memperoleh kredit mikro bagi para petani lokal untuk membantu mereka meningkatkan sarana pertumbuhan dan produksi kopi mereka.
