Program Health (Food Security and Nutrition)

Dates May 2005 - September 2009

Partner

Food Security and Nutrition Program

The program focuses on improving the nutritional status of Indonesians through the targeting of poor, food insecure communities.  Program objectives aim to (1) increase dietary intake, in terms of both quantity and quality, among vulnerable populations, (2) increase access to and quality of key health and environmental services, (3) mobilize individuals and communities to improve health, hygiene and nutrition related behaviors, and (4) strengthen communities’ capacities to organize, plan, implement and represent their food security interests.  Activities primarily impact upon women and children through targeted supplemental feeding and nutrition education.  The program also works closely with local communities in the construction of public facilities such as latrines, washing stations and protected water stations, and in organizing solid waste disposal to protect overall community health.  Over one million people will receive direct USAID assistance with millions more benefiting indirectly.

SCF is implementing the “Medan Food Security and Nutrition Program” in six (6) sub-districts of Medan, North Sumatra.  Working with District Health Officers, SCF will build the capacity of local health staff to deliver quality health and nutrition services.  SCF will also support health, nutrition and hygiene education; supplemental feeding and nutritional rehabilitation activities; and work with local communities to plan, design and implement small-scale infrastructure projects that address environmental health concerns.
