Dr. Kerri Anne Jones, the Department of State Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Environment and Science, visited the Sedang Village in Bali to meet with Ministry of Agriculture representatives (National, Provincial, and District) and local Ministry of Health District Surveillance Officers. Dr. Jones, who is also the State Dept. Avian Influenza Coordinator, visited the village to learn about USAID’s very successsful Participatory Disease Response and Surveillance Program (PDSR). Sedang's last poultry outbreaks was in 2007 The PDSR program was launched in 2006 to raise awareness of Highly Pathogen Avian Influenza in the communities and to strengthen veterinarian official capabilities to carry out routine surveillance for AI, properly respond and report to outbreaks, and work with local surveillance officers to prevent human cases. Currently there are over 2,151 surveillance officers now active in 324 districts throughout Indonesia.
